Japan visa-free entry for Indonesians — Visa Waiver Registration (15 days)

Indonesian nationals with an ICAO-compliant biometric passport can register for a free Visa Waiver at the Embassy of Japan in Jakarta or any consulate (Surabaya, Denpasar, Makassar, Medan). Registration takes ~3 working days and is valid 3 years or until the passport expires, whichever is earlier. With the registration seal / electronic registration in place, entry is visa-free for tourism up to 15 days per visit. For stays longer than 15 days, or for non-tourism purposes, use eVisa or the traditional visa route.

Japan tourist visa for Indonesians — JAPAN eVISA (online)

Indonesia is on the MOFA JAPAN eVISA accredited-agency tier. Apply online for a single-entry short-term tourism visa (up to 90 days) — no visit to the embassy. Use cases: (a) you don't have Visa Waiver Registration and want to skip in-person application; (b) you have the registration but need to stay 16–90 days for tourism. Fully digital: display the "visa issuance notice" on your phone/tablet at airport check-in (PDFs, screenshots, and printed copies are NOT accepted). Online payment only; ordinary passport holders only.

Japan Specified Skilled Worker (特定技能) visa for Indonesians

The Specified Skilled Worker (SSW) program is a major Japan work route for Indonesians, especially in construction, caregiving, food service, and manufacturing. Requirements: (a) pass a sector-specific skills test + (b) Japanese language test (JFT-Basic or JLPT N4+). A Japanese employer files the COE (1–3 months). SSW Type 1 allows up to 5 years stay; Type 2 in select sectors allows long-term stay with family sponsorship. Note: SSW Type 1 years do NOT count toward the 5-year qualifying work-visa subset for permanent residency.

Japan Technical Intern Training (技能実習) for Indonesians

Indonesia is a major source country of Technical Intern Trainees. Trainees work at a designated Japanese workplace for up to 5 years across three phases. Selection goes through an Indonesian sending organization partnered with a Japanese supervising organization (監理団体). Important: TIT years do NOT count toward permanent residency. Many trainees transition to SSW afterward.

Japan EPA nurse / caregiver visa for Indonesians

Under the Japan–Indonesia Economic Partnership Agreement (EPA), Indonesian nurse and caregiver candidates are invited each year. Candidates receive Japanese language training (N3–N4 level) before and during placement, then must pass the Japanese national board exam (看護師国家試験 for nurses, 介護福祉士国家試験 for caregivers) within 3–4 years. Passing opens a path to long-term residence. Annual quotas are published by MHLW.

Japan student visa for Indonesians — school-filed COE

Students enrolling in Japanese language schools, vocational schools, undergraduate or graduate programs need a COE filed by the school in Japan (2–3 months). Then apply at the embassy/consulate with: passport, COE original, enrollment letter, sponsor financial proof (tuition + ~¥100,000/month living expenses for 1–2 years), sponsor employment/income.
