Japan Visa for Vietnamese Citizens
Vietnamese citizens need a visa for every trip to Japan — tourism included. Here's how long a visa lets you stay, and how to apply in five steps.

Submit and pay
Applications go through agencies designated by the embassy (designated travel companies for package tours) — nothing is accepted by post, email or fax, and only a few cases, such as spouses and children of Japanese nationals, may apply at the embassy directly. You can apply up to 3 months before you enter Japan. Which office handles your visa depends on where you live:

Wait for the decision
- At least 6 working days from the day after you apply (since 1 February 2024). Extra documents, an interview or a referral to Tokyo can add several weeks.
- Late February to early April is the busiest season — apply as early as you can then.
- The embassy recommends buying your plane ticket only after the visa is issued, and it does not speed up visas except in humanitarian emergencies.
- Questions: Japan visa hotline +84 28 4458 2397 (Vietnamese/English, Mon–Fri 8:30–17:15). The embassy does not answer questions about issue dates or refusal reasons.

A single-entry visa is valid for 3 months from issue and is used up once you enter Japan.
eVISA — single-entry tourism
Package tours only: if you join a tour run by a designated travel company, the tourist visa can be issued as an eVISA with a 15-day stay.
eVISA holders: show it live on your phone
A visa doesn't guarantee entry — the immigration officer at the airport makes the final decision.
If your visa is refused
- No visa fee is charged when a visa isn't issued; agency or visa-centre fees are not refunded.
- The embassy does not tell you why — Japan does not give reasons for visa refusals.
- You can't reapply for the same purpose within 6 months. The exception: your circumstances have changed significantly and the trip is needed for humanitarian reasons — ask the embassy first.

Vietnamese nationals can get two kinds of multiple-entry visa:
- General multiple-entry visa (visits, tourism): valid 1, 3 or 5 years, 15 or 30 days per stay.
- Business multiple-entry visa (business travellers, cultural and intellectual figures and others): valid 1, 3, 5 or 10 years, 15, 30 or 90 days per stay.

Staying longer than 90 days
Work, study and family stays need a Certificate of Eligibility (COE) first. Your employer, school or family in Japan applies for it; you then take it to the embassy for the visa.

Can I apply online?
Only for package tours: Vietnamese nationals living in Vietnam who join a tour of a designated travel agency can get a 15-day tourist eVISA. Other trips need a visa sticker.
Can I reapply if my visa is refused?
Not for the same purpose within 6 months, unless your circumstances have changed significantly and the trip is needed for humanitarian reasons. The embassy won't tell you the reason for a refusal.
Can I apply at the embassy myself?
Generally no. Applications go through agencies designated by the embassy, or designated travel companies for package tours. Spouses and children of Japanese nationals are among the few who can apply directly.
