Japan Visa Renewal vs Extension — What's the Difference?

These two words are often used interchangeably, but they refer to different administrative actions in Japan.

What is visa "renewal" (在留期間更新)?
Renewal means extending the period of stay while keeping the same residence status (e.g., Engineer/Humanities for 1 more year, or Spouse for 3 more years). File at your local Immigration Bureau up to 3 months before expiry. Approval takes 2 weeks to 2 months. Fee is ¥6,000 in revenue stamps when approved.
What is "change of status" (在留資格変更)?
Change of status means switching to a different residence category (e.g., Student → Engineer after finding a job, or Dependent → HSP after career change). Documentation requirements match a fresh application — full certificates, employer letters, tax records. Same Immigration Bureau, same ¥6,000 fee on approval.
Can a Tourist Visa be renewed or extended?
Generally no. Short-Term Stay is fixed at 15 / 30 / 90 days and cannot be "renewed". Extensions are granted only in narrow exceptional cases (documented medical emergency, natural disaster, flight cancellation beyond your control), applied for at the Immigration Bureau before the original stay expires. Plan around the original permitted stay.
