Japan Visa for Colombian Citizens

Complete visa guide for Colombian passport holders — requirements, documents, fees, and application process

Colombian citizens need a Japan visa for any visit, including tourism — there is no visa-free entry and no visa on arrival. Despite older internet pages that call Colombia "technically visa-free," MOFA's guidance since 1 February 2004 explicitly states Colombians should obtain a visa in advance or risk strict examination and refusal at the border. Applications are lodged at the Embassy of Japan in Bogotá; there is no VFS Global intermediary. Tourist visa: single-entry, short-term stay up to 90 days, processing 5–7 working days.

Visa pathways for Colombian applicants

Tourist / short-stay visa — how to apply

File directly at the Embassy of Japan in Bogotá. Typical documents: valid passport (2 blank pages, 6 months validity), MOFA visa form with 4.5×4.5 cm photo, confirmed round-trip flight, hotel bookings for the full stay, last 3 months of bank statements, employment certificate or business registration, and — if visiting relatives — an invitation letter with guarantor documents. Spanish-language documents must be translated to English or Japanese. Processing 5–7 working days.

Nikkei Colombians — Long-Term Resident path

Colombians of Japanese descent (Nikkei up to 3rd generation) may qualify for a Long-Term Resident visa (定住者) via a separate COE path. The Japanese consular authorities assess descent through koseki (family register) records and supporting genealogical documentation. Processing is significantly more complex than a standard tourist visa — consult the embassy early.

Frequently asked questions — Colombian

Is there a visa-free deal between Colombia and Japan?
No. Despite older pages that describe Colombia as "technically visa-free," MOFA's official guidance since 1 February 2004 requires Colombian passport holders to obtain a visa in advance. Arriving without a visa results in strict examination and likely refusal of entry. Colombia is not on the 74-country visa-exempt list (MOFA notice, note 10).
How much does a Japan tourist visa cost for Colombians?
The consular fee is roughly COP 550,000 for single entry and COP 1,100,000 for multiple entry, paid in Colombian pesos at the embassy rate. Transit visas cost around COP 125,000. Add COP 30,000–120,000 for Spanish-to-English/Japanese translation of supporting documents. No VFS service fee — Colombia uses direct embassy intake.
Do Colombian citizens need a Japan visa?
Yes, every visit. Colombia is not on the Japan visa-exempt list, and there is no visa on arrival (see Japan visa on arrival guide). Applications are filed at the Embassy of Japan in Bogotá before departure. Nikkei Colombians have a separate Long-Term Resident COE path for extended stays.
