What is a Certificate of Eligibility (COE)?
The COE is the single most important factor affecting processing time:
- With COE: Visa processing takes about 5 working days (embassy only needs to verify documents)
- Without COE: The embassy must coordinate with immigration in Japan, taking 1-3 months
Who applies for the COE?
- Usually your sponsor in Japan (employer, school, spouse)
- COE processing itself takes 1-3 months at the regional immigration bureau
- COE is valid for 3 months from issuance

Tips for Faster Processing

Express/Urgent Processing
